JUST today Atletico Madrid made the worst possible start to Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first-leg clash with Arsenal after Sime Vrsaljko was shown a second yellow after just 10 minutes.
The Gunners made an excellent start the match, with the Emirates rocking in
Arsene Wenger ’s last ever European home match, and should have been ahead when Alexandre Lacazette hit the post.
But it did not take long for Arsenal to take full control after both Vrsaljko – and then his manager, Diego Simeone – saw red.Right-back Vrsaljko was first penalised for a heavy touch that saw Jack Wilshere nip in and steal the ball, only for the Croatian to chop him down.
Just a few minutes later, Vrsaljko went in late again – this time on Lacazette – and looked stunned when the referee brandished a second yellow card, the fifth fastest sending off in Europa League history.
Incredibly, his first yellow card (after 75 seconds) and second yellow card (after nine minutes and nine seconds) are the fastest yellow card and second yellow card respectively in the competition’s history.Vrsaljko tried to remonstrate with the referee before leaving the pitch shaking his head in disbelief with a sarcastic smile on his face, and then arguing with a teammate in the Emirates tunnel.
The Atletico bench were fuming with the decision, and Simeone stalked along the touchline furiously.Just two minutes later, Simeone took umbrage with a challenge from Hector Bellerin and unleashed a barrage of abuse at the referee to get another yellow card out.
But, rather than getting out his book again, the referee went over to the touchline and sent a livid Simeone to the stands as Atletico completely lost their heads, with the visitors now praying for another Jan Oblak masterclass to keep the tie alive.
